Do you listen to any kind of independent radio? Affiliated in any way with a non-profit? Well as far as the radio question, I do. The station is called KEXP and it is based out of Seattle. Every so often they have a pledge drive, pleading for funds to keep the service going.
This morning one of the DJ’s was pretty hilarious in his petition for donations. He went on about how donating is fighting the man, topples corporation at its Achille’s heel, and is one of the final last breaths of independence in an increasingly homogenized society. (My words, not his, but this was the general sentiment). There are next to zero sources for music that aren’t backed by or manipulated by some kind of fat cat, and donating is an act of free will that George Washington and Sid Vicious dreamed of.
I got pretty fired up. No I don’t think I will make that much of a difference in the planet with $15 dollars to a radio station. But the way the DJ carried on for a good 5 minute rant about the importance of independent music encouraged me in my quest and purpose of this blog and life – to fight against messages and traditions that are harmful. It really is refreshing to see and hear others fighting a similar fight. There is so much garbage out there that we are force fed, and it’s comforting to hear others stand up and say, “yeah that’s crap.”
I don’t have much more to say on that today, but I wanted to shout out to an amazing organization that I whole heartedly support. To those of you that haven’t checked it out, you can stream it here. You don’t have to donate but if you have the means, it’s a good cause.
On most Fridays what KEXP gives me is the Friday Song and a joyful ride to work, but today they gave me much more. A fire in my belly to stand up and keep fighting.
